Trash can lid and trash bag vs. bullets

Post by Splinter » Mon Apr 04, 2016 7:42 pm

I didn't wanna make a video for this, so I made a little comic strip.

For me it's silly to take cover in a trash can and not being able to shoot because of the lid. There are some objects with specific properties, such as cardboard box and bucket, which allow bullets to him them, but go through them. I think trash can lid should be like that, or even have no collision with bullets at all. And trash bag, for me, looks like an object which is not "hard/solid" enough like crates and barrels, so bullets and rockets should maybe go through it.

Also I just remembered the cash register which is frequently on top of good cover spots, maybe it should have same properties as bucket?

Some objects are a little quirky like this and I think they add to the gameplay experience.

The lid is definitely an issue. The little bastard often prevents players from shooting through it when they take cover, but that also means while the trash can is a good piece of cover with high health, it also means you can't shoot over it without first attempting to remove the lid. It's something you gotta look out for!

Trash bags are of the "paper" material, which only takes 10% damage from bullets/melee. The trash bag has 15 health, which translates to 150 health if it took regular damage, it's movable, and it absorbs bullets/blocks rockets. It breaks quickly if set on fire or blown up though.

I think both the lid and trash bag are wonky objects in the game, but it adds more for the player to look out for, and I think that's good.

Whaat, how did you know about this? So if I shoot through paper, the enemy takes 90% of the damage?

It's great having objects that interact differently with melee, bullets, explosions and fire. I guess I can accept the trash bag and cash register the way they are, but the trash can lid is just really annoying and nonsensical for me.

While I agree with Lunatic that variations like that can be fun, I think Splinter is right in that it's not clear enough that those objects are projectile-absorbant. I like the idea of loose bits of cover that can save your life randomly, but it doesn't work well with explosive projectiles -- blowing yourself up with a bazooka and not even knowing why is mostly frustrating. So I think I'll change this for the next update -- trashcan lids, trashbags and cash registers will be shoot-through.

Ouch! I'd at least make those items able to block bullets. Making it so that explosives go through them would be understandable, but blocking bullets is what made paying attention to your position important! Are you also going to change the swivel chair too, so that it also doesn't absorb bullets?

Splinter, the way it works is as follows: Paper material items only receive 10% damage from projectiles, so if it had 100 health and I had a weapon that did 10 damage, it would take me 100 shots to kill it since it's only taking 1 damage per shot. That said, it doesn't change how much damage other people take as a result.
