I'm pretty sure most people use arrow keys.

I just play with this setup

I find it extremely easy to use: All the keys are mashed up really close, and I can reach any key easily.
Also, I don't know why you said that the Z key is hard to reach. I can reach it no problem with my setup.

How is sheathe not an important hotkey? It's very important. If you're with a sniper, then an enemy forces melee, you have to sheathe as quickly as possible. Maybe pressing the sniper key again sheathes that weapon, but I like having a quick "Q" sheathe.
Changing keys too much sometimes is... "dangerous", because it can cause keyboard ghosting. For players that don't have small arrow keys, it's best to use them, as you should never give up movement, not even for a split second, to do other things such as equipping a weapon with the same hand.
I'm used to the weapon keys being 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I just switched a few things on my setup: powerup(5) is space for me (very quick!), throwing weapons(G, too far) is E, and Punch and Kick are switched, because I prefer the "weaker" ring finger for the kick.
Celebrations and taunts could be done like those wizard/invoker mods. Alt+something. Alt+run = walk. Alt+punch = taunt. Alt+block = celebration, etc.

I'm too lazy to diagram a keyboard and upload the picture.
WASD - movement
R - reload
F - pickup
Q - Sheathe
G - throw mode
1-5 - weapon slots
J - punch
K - block
L - kick
i - grab
I also don't like double tap to sprint, so I mostly just hold left-shift. Looking forward to the option to completely remove double tap sprint so I can only button sprint. Also looking forward to the same thing for grabs. Button combinations in this game make it clunkier than need be.
As stated by Splinter, sheathing is a very important button and shouldn't be neglected.

Ariq Haqq wrote:Couldn't you just use melee "Q", because if you don't have a weapon selected it automatically sheathes... But this is not the point of this post! The point is the game is being overcomplicated!
Do you mean the melee key (1 by default)? But if you have a melee weapon like a katana you might not want to equip it while getting punched, or you might easily get disarmed.
I think the game really is complicated, but I think that's a positive aspect of SFD. It's really hard to play, takes a lot of skill. It kinda feels like... playing as Zero on Megaman.

He has a lot of different cool moves, and requires skill. A lot of people nowadays complain that games are too easy, so who knows, people might like SFD because of that.

SFD is far from complicated. This game is super simple, and while it does require skill, the skill floor is very low and the skill required to start doing well is fairly low as well. That doesn't mean there's no room for higher skill levels but the game is too simple to be labelled complex.
There might be a lot of buttons here but there are many more complicated games. I loathe to admit that most MOBAs are more complicated. ARMA is very complicated, though it's in a class of it's own.

I can't image how your guys' hands look while playing SFD. Ya'll either have your keys real close together or very far apart. I prefer to have my keys setup like this. (I forgot to label Q as sheathe)
So when I play my hands are laid out like this, except my left hand is moved over by one key.

My keys are:-
Arrow keys
N punch. M kick. Comma block
1-5 weps
Z show chat
F1-8 vote
H grab
Right alt walk
Left shift sprint
J activate/pickup
K reload
L sheathe
OemSemicolon as throw/throwing mode
Cam view is |(default)
So ya that's my setup. You can argue its not comfy but I'm used to it

We'll figure out a way. Might even make it so that we can just hold down an already binded key for any celebration.

Controls:
Up = P
Down = ;
Left = L
Right = '
Sprint = Right Shift
Walk = A
Grab = F
Pickup = Page Button
Throw = Right CTRL
Sheathe = Right ALT
Punch = R
Block = E
Kick = W
Reload = Q
Hotkeys = 1,2,3,4
Space = Show Chat
Enter = Message
Left Shift = Camera Modes
Also, why grab = Punch+Block? I think it's over complicated 'cause people can accidentally trigger it...

Wait,who said celebrations are going to be a thing?
Anyway,if by that you mean a simple taunt/animation,or literally anything that shouldn't be done in a hurry,there is no point in placing them near the hot zone in a keyboard.
You can simply put them in a more casual zone,or simply require a 2-button combination to use them.
Anyway,I think the standard button assignment works just fine,and I can see even more possilbe hotkeys in it.

I must say that button setup is kinda personal thing that every player does for him(or her)self. I personally use default buttons and I'm okay with that. God Gurt gave you customisation. Use it. Only stupid won't find setup if he (or she) doesn't feel comfortable with default controls. And we still got plenty of space to place features. For example, we don't use "E" button or "`" in default setup and these ones can be easily reached. But to be honest, I don't think that we need separate taunt button. We already have plenty of animations and you can taunt it your way if you are creative enough. Plus, walk button can be considered as taunt. So, meh.
