When you press the button to hide the path node layer from view, the outlines of the path nodes still stay there. While they are not actually clickable, it can be quite frustrating and can interfere when making edits to a map after it has been noded.

On the upper panel, you'll find many icons, there's a magnet, a grid, a cross, a green square, and the last one is a path node. You have to click on this last icon in order to hide the outlines.

Click on the path-node icon to hide the path-node outlines as mentioned by Mr Argon. This feature is not bound to the visibility of path node layers (you can have multiple path node layers where half of them are hidden and the other half visible). The outlines will simple just show everyone when it's activated.
