occasionally, the player's swings will not connect with the opposing player. i've only seen it occur a couple times and think it deals with not being able to hit grounded opponents or something...?

it happened to me quite a few times, and I'm not sure if it's really depending on the situation. It's probably more common after certain movements, but generally this has to do with the netcode, the delay, the player. I can fight someone without problems in the same lobby as the guy I'm having misses with. But that's my impression

Watching the video it might look strange at first but it all works as expected. Naruto misses you as he punches the air above you when you lay on the ground. You miss him because your ping is 126 and you haven't turned around yet on the server (you're still facing left on the server). Hit detection is only happening on the server.

126 ping is fantastic ping to have. It generally makes the game feel fluid with minimal issues for gameplay.
Every time I've gone to attack with high ping, my character stands still for longer than it usually takes to make a swing. When the swing comes out, though, it connects with whatever is in front of me, and if I press to turn around after I initiate this swing, it'll turn me around and attack.
Considering I was hosting this game, I saw it happen myself. He had swung but didn't hit the player at all. Since Naruto was in range to kick, he was easily in range to be hit by any attacks Zyfex used. This isn't a lag thing.

also this was never a thing until around 1.9.1 (whenever you had to crouch to hit grounded opponents). i've seen enough sfd in my time
