I have made a silly mistake. I did not realize that there was separate keybinding for crouching and and moving down. It should be noted however that in the tutorial the game prompted me to use my "s" key to drop down through platforms, despite it not being the correct key for that action (it should ...

During normal gameplay, I found myself unable to drop though thin platforms. At first I believed the issue was due to key binding, but I discovered I am able to go up and down ladders as if my down key was working normally.
